How to Transfer Contacts from iTunes to iPhone

How to Transfer Contacts from iTunes to iPhone

Did you lose some of the contacts on your iPhone? Are the contacts you lost backed up to a recent iTunes backup? The logical solution in this case would be to get the contacts back from iTunes. However, as simple as that sounds and as reliable as iTunes can be sometimes, it is not the only solution out there. Sure, you can get the contacts back by simply restoring the backup but what if you don't want to restore the backup?

In this article we take a look at how you can transfer contacts from iTunes to an iPhone, explain to you the shortcomings of using iTunes method and provide you with an alternative solution.
1. Transfer Data from iTunes to iPhone via iTunes

Like we've mentioned, iTunes offers a simple reliable way to transfer data from an iTunes backup to your iPhone. Provided the contacts you need are on an iTunes backup, the following steps should help you get the data back quickly and easily.

Step 1: Begin by ensuring you do have a recent backup of the data on your iPhone in iTunes. Also, make sure that you are running the most recent version of iTunes.

Step 2: Next, you need to erase the contents and settings on your iPhone to get to the set-up screen. To do that go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Contents and Settings.

Step 3: Follow the on-screen instructions until you get to the "Apps & Data" screen and then choose "Restore from iTunes Backup". Tap "Next".

Step 4: Connect the device to the computer and then open iTunes. Select the iPhone when it appears in iTunes.

Step 5: Select "Restore Backup" and then choose the most recent backup. If the backup was encrypted, enter the password when prompted.

Step 6: Keep the device connected to the computer and wait for the whole process to the complete and you should have your contacts back on your iPhone.

There are two main problems with this method. To begin with, you have to erase all the contents and settings on your device before you can restore the contacts. Also, you are not able to simply get into the iTunes backup and restore just the contacts as opposed to everything else.

How to Backup iPhone to an External Hard Drive 2019

How to Backup iPhone to an External Hard Drive 2019

"I want to back up my iPhone to an external hard drive. I don't have enough storage space on my MacBook's hard drive. I have already moved all my iTunes libraries and media folders to the external hard drive, but I need to know how to get the hard drive to be the default storage for my iPhone backup. Does anyone know how to do this?"

Backing up your iPhone to your Mac can no doubt wreak havoc on your storage space. That's why most people will often try to back up the device to an external hard drive. In this article, we are going to show you how to set up Mac OS X, so you can easily back up your iPhone to an external drive.
How to Backup iPhone to an External Hard Drive on Mac

In order to successfully back up your iPhone to an external drive, you will need to have a little bit of knowledge of directory structures and command line. This is because we will be using symbolic links to get that done. Not to mention you will also need the usual iTunes, a USB cable, the iPhone itself and an external hard drive.

It is also worth mentioning that this process will work on all versions of Mac OS X, all iOS devices with all versions of iOS and all versions of iTunes. That said, here's a step by step guide to help you get it done.

Step 1: Quit iTunes of its still open on your computer.

Step 2: If you haven't already done so, connect the external hard drive you intend to use to the computer and then create a new folder on the drive that will be dedicated to your iTunes backups. You can name the folder anything as long as the file name denotes that it will be an iTunes backup folder.

Step 3: Open the Finder window and then hit Command+ Shift + G and enter the following path ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/

Step 4: In this directory, find the folder called "Backup" and then copy that folder to the folder you just created in the external hard drive.

Step 5: Now back in the ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ path, rename "Backup" to "Backup-Old". You can also just delete it but only if you are certain you have copied it to the external hard drive.

Step 6: Launch the Terminal application. You can find it in /Applications/Utilities/ and then type following command:

ln -s /Volumes/FileStorage/Name of Backup File/

~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync

Replace "Name of Backup File" with the actual name for the backup file you created in the external hard drive

You may also need to replace "FileStorage" with the name of the external drive.

Step 7: Now, quit Terminal and then go back to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync. In the Finder, the backup folder should be a generic file with an arrow on it. This signifies that there is now a direct link between that "Backup" and the location on your external drive.Sponsor ads:Top 7 Best Superhero wallpaper Apps for Android 2019

Step 8: Open iTunes and connect the iPhone. Select it when it shows up within iTunes and select "This Computer" as the backup location.

Step 9: Click "Back Up Now" to start the backup process.Sponsor ads:Movie4k Alternative Websites for Movie Streaming
Sponsor ads:Top 10 iPhone Receipt Tracking Apps to Scan & Manage Your Receipts 2019

Step 10: Once the backup is complete, confirm its location by going to the folder on the external hard drive. There should be a "Backup" folder containing a subdirectory. This is the backup you've just created.

That's it. Your backups will now be saved to that external drive as long as it is connected to the Mac. Be advised that the backup will fail if the external drive is disconnected.
How to Create External iTunes Backups Entirely with Command Line

For more advanced users, you can complete the entire process of directory creation from the command line. If you choose to, this is how the general syntax would look.

mkdir /Volumes/ExternalFileStorage/iTunesDeviceBackups/

cp ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/ Volumes/ExternalFileStorage/iTunesDeviceBackups/

cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/

rm -r Backup/

ln -s /Volumes/ExternalFileStorage/iTunesDeviceBackups/Backup/ ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/

The iTunes backup will back up to the external drive once the symbolic link has been achieved. It is however a good idea to keep backing up via iCloud as well, you never know what could go wrong.

Step 4: Open iTunes and go to Files > Library > Organize Library, and make sure that Consolidate Files is checked.

The Importance of Erasing Private/Delete iPhone Data

Based on studies done on this issue, the photos or other data you delete from Snapchat manually are not deleted in reality. The application just changes the labels making it difficult to detect by the operating system used in the device. To prevent it from recovering,it is importance to protect private Snapchat pictures, messages, videos, photos, notes, etc. by using a competent Snapchat history eraser like iMyFone iPhone Eraser when deleting your files, this is because most deleted files on iPhone can be traced back or recovered if the file is not deleted appropriately with the right tool.

Therefore, using iMyFone iPhone Eraser to erase private files or to erase deleted files would help to protect your privacy by erasing iPhone files permanently without leaving any trace behind. The recommended Umate feature to achieving these fits is by using "Erasing Private Data" option or "Erasing Deleted Files" option respectively.Sponsor ads:

Download iOS 12.2 Beta 2 without developer account

WHAT’S NEW IN IOS 12.2 BETA 2?

iOS 12.2 Developer Beta 2 has a build number of 16E5191d. This update weighs about 350MB via over-the-air update on compatible devices.

Since Apple has yet to publish the changelog pertaining to this update, we aren’t sure what has changed in this version.

Last week, a Twitter user revealed a critical bug in FaceTime that allowed the caller to eavesdrop on conversations. Following this debacle, Apple remotely disabled FaceTime group calls on all devices on iOS 12.1.3 and below.

So, at the very least, we can expect the FaceTime group calling feature to become functional again.

Registered developers can download this update from the Apple Developer Center.

If you are not enrolled in Apple’s developer program, just download the OTA Profile using the link below (the links will go live very soon). Alternatively, you can update your Apple device using iTunes with a compatible IPSW file.

How to Recover Photos from Dead/Broken iPhone 2019

What to Do First
1. Try to Fix iPhone to Avoid Data Loss

If you dropped the iPhone in water and water damage is what you're dealing with, try the following to dry off the device.

1. Get your iPhone out of the water as fast as possible.

2. If it's still on, turn it off because running a wet electronic device could damage it permanently. Dry it with a towel and try putting it in dry rice for a few hours.

3. Be patient and don't try to turn it on. Leave it alone for a few days.

If the screen is broken but the device is still fully functional, ask a professional repair shop to fix it. Just be sure to inquire whether the data will be wiped or not during repair.

2. Check If the iPhone is Synced with iTunes or iCloud

Most people won't back up their iPhone via iTunes regularly since you need a computer and USB cable to manually back up your data. Unlike iTunes, iCloud will automatically back up your device each day through the network, if the following conditions are met:

You have turned on iCloud Backup in Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup.

You have connected your device to a power source and to a Wi-Fi network.

You still have available space in iCloud.

Check whether there is the latest backup on your computer or iCloud that could contain the photos you want. If you had turned on iCloud, the photos could also be backed up to iCloud.

Note

However, restoring the backup file may erase all data and settings on your old iPhone and you cannot choose to recover just photos.

In the next section, we will introduce you to a tool that will help you selectively recover photos from iTunes/iCloud or directly from the iPhone.Sponsor ads:
